It is with great sadness and shock that I have to report that Ron passed away on Sunday morning.
Ron had just finished umpring Broxbourne's game at Southgate Adelaide when he collapsed from what is believed to have been a heart attack. First aid was administered and two ambulances arrived at the scene within five minutes, but sadly although his heart was restarted, he never regained consciousness. Ron, who had umpired at Broxbourne since 1974, leaves a widow Wendy, and two daughters Alison and Joanna.
Although a number of you will not have known Ron, as he umpired predominantly for the ladies teams and the lower men's teams, he could always be relied upon to turn up almost every week without fail - one of the unsung heroes of the hockey club.
He will be badly missed by all his friends and sporting colleagues at Broxbourne HC.
On Saurday, all the teams will hold a one minutes silence before the game in Ron's honour, and the captains will organise a collection.
For those of you who would like to attend the funeral, it is taking place at Parnwood Cemetery and Crematorium (near Harlow) at 12.00 on Friday 13th October. The address and directions are at:

Wendy has asked that rather than sending flowers, could any donations be made to the Gurkha Welfare Trust (http://www.gwt.org.uk/).
