Saturday 8th October Mens 5th Team vs British Aerospace League - East Division 6SW

The advent of Richard Mellor taking over the captaincy of the 5's inspired the team to their best performance of the season. With silky skills from Steve Haywood, Dean Webb and Captain Mellor up front, complemented by a solid midfield of Smithy, Nick Gandon and Patrick Steele and a rotund defensive back four of Treaders Snr, Colin Meadows, Rutts and Hummy there was never going to be a chance of the opposition getting past that amount of flesh and bulk. A total eclipse duly ensued, with Broxbourne having 80% possession, but failing to hit the target up to half time. Chris Blow in goal had been sitting in his deckchair booking his summer holidays in the first half, but was called into action at the beginning of the second half when Colin Meadows had put the back four to sleep with his tactical nous!! Faced with 3 against 1, and the rest of the team applauding his goal keeping skills from the half way line, Chris made a double save to keep the game goal less. This made Broxbourne wake up and from the 15th short corner, Smithy slipped the ball back to Treaders snr who lashed the ball into the bottom of the net. Further chances went astray, but Broxbourne doubled their lead when the threat of Hummy coming up to take a short corner inspired Patrick Steele to score from the short and save the team the prospect of Hummy whining on all night about his great short corner strike!! 2-0 it finished with the team mightily relieved at narrowly avoiding Hummy's dreary monologue.
