Saturday 22nd October 2005 Broxbourne Mens 3s v Royston 2s Result: Lost 4 - 3 Report by John Chapman
With a few changes to the personnel, including Ollie whose suggestion about sand clearance led to him being beaten up by year 7s and suffering a broken toe, we invested in 4th team ability and recruited Mr Edwards. Dylan and Mike also returned. You know it's going to be one of those games when from the push back the ball not only beats the whole of our midfield but the defence too! Corner to Royston after 5 seconds. Surely we would improve? Unfortunately we didn't. 2 goals from Royston (on the first, I watched the ball, then watched the player get the ball, then watched him put it in the goal and a 2nd similar effort by a team mate), summed up the first half. We were 2nd to everything. Pressure at the end of the half led to a short corner and we did get a flick, but unfortunately it went wide. We all knew what we had to do but we just couldn't get going. In the second half, 2 more Royston goals went in before we started to take our chances. At 4 nil down we had nothing to lose and we showed some fighting spirit and nearly pulled off a draw. Goals from Dylan Hubble(2) and Mike Smith restored some pride but couldn't disguise our lack of effort and lack of confidence on the ball. Personally I blame the 5th team who played before us, their display of silky Hockey lulled us into thinking that our game would also be a 10-1 walk over. MOTM= John Edwards for his surging runs in the 2nd half and having to lower himself to 3rd team standards.
