Saturday 12th November 2005 Broxbourne Mens 3s v West Herts 4s Result: Won 2-0 Report by John Chapman
After my doom and gloom report from last week I've been told to cheer things up or face the axe, so here we go. A typical type of game against West Herts, they always seem to produce teams that fight right to the end. The 3rds faced some more changes to personnel as Captain Cranfield attempted to introduce some pace and vitality into his attack. His secret weapon was the sprinter that we know as Roger Goddard. In all seriousness it worked well. Roger made good runs into space and our long range passes were now retained by the forward line until the midfield arrived with their deck chairs. A fairly tight first half saw the Broxbourne midfield grow in confidence which led to a goal near half time from the Captain following a swift counter attack. The one downside was a green card to this writer, for a filthy bit of deliberate gamesmanship when he illegally stopped the ball with his stick. Well that's what the West Herts umpire thought. I just figured he hadn't been to Specsavers lately. The 2nd half was much more a case of Broxbourne applying more pressure and awaiting another goal. This came from a good attack down the right which saw James pick his spot from about level with the back line and score off an inside deflection of the Keeper's foot. James claimed it but I had my doubts. West Herts piled on some pressure with a series of late short corners but the defence held on. Game over job done and everyone much happier than after the Welwyn game. This week Bedford, I'll be taking a break in Suffolk so I'll be back for my home town match against the Marsh Farm mob. MOTM a difficult one this week as it was team work that was the more important, however Mr House patrolled the centre spot so admirably in the 2nd half that it has to go to him?
