Saturday 11th February 2006 Broxbourne Mens 3s v Bishops Stortford 3s Result: Won 2-1 Report by John Chapman

Having spent our pre-match warm up checking over the oppo for how many ringers they might have we started in a positive way against the bottom of the table team. We conceded a goal after about 5 minutes! If things go wrong they can go doubly wrong in the 3s it seems as 5 minutes later an Exocet of a pin point cross from the Captain found it's way on to Nick Miller's stick. Unfortunately the ball was about 3 foot of the ground and the result was at least 1 broken finger by the looks of things. Exit Mr Miller to the nearest A&E Dept. At that point I realised we only had 10 men and this was going to be tough. It looked like it wasn't going to be our day 10 men and 1 nil down v the bottom team, how wrong can u be. Just as Mr Miller was departing an attack down the right gave me the chance to get in to the D and a hard hit cross from I think James or Scott found me on the PF spot, I managed to get the faintest deflection and was pretty shocked to see it hit the far back boards - 1 all! Down to 10 men seemed to throw Stortford in to confusion and everyone had space, Another good hit in to the D was then met by Scotty who got an excellent deflection in to the corner of the goal. Amazing! Although Stortford came back and had a couple of shots go just wide it proved an excellent 1st half. The 2nd was much more difficult, Stortford re organised and put us under constant pressure. Fortunately great play from the back 4 of John, Dickie, Giles and Andy plus Tim in goal kept the Stortford forwards out. We didn't create much but when we did I was guilty of 2 big errors when 1v1 against their last defender. It looked like we were on for a famous win. Then with time up we conceded a short corner. I think that was a harsh decision by the Stortford Umpire but they missed their chance, but another short was awarded followed by I think 6 more where the defence managed to block each attempt. Finally the ball was cleared and the game was over. A crazy game and very satisfying all round. Very hard to pick out a man of the match, but for his all round work in attack and defence plus the goal I would say it was Scott Watson.
