Saturday 28th January 2006 Broxbourne Mens 2s v Rickmansworth Result 5-4: Report by The Magpie

Broxbourne 2's got a huge win in their bid for promotion after they defeated third placed Rickmansworth in a 5-4 thriller. The home side made a terrible start and were three goals down after 20 minutes. A tactical change by Captain Jim Fox gave the Badgers a foothold in the game. Duncan Cogdell moved into a more central role and the Badgers immediately looked more threatening going forward. Cogdell quickly won a short corner and Andy Law beat two players before firing in low to the keepers left. Broxbourne should have reduced their arrears further but Nick Anstead somehow found a way to miss an open goal from one yard out. Anstead quickly made amends when Cogdell made a great interception to set up the striker who this time was clinical from a yard. With half time approaching and firmly back in the game Broxbourne were again caught out by the long ball and Rickmansworth went 4-2 up after keeper Paul Staples was beaten far too easily at his near post. The Badgers came out for the second half rejuvenated with midfield duo of Law and Will Fradley dominating possession. Law set up Anstead for his second and then left back Danny Ellis fed Matt Barnes whose powerful strike gave the keeper no chance. With the scores level Rickmansworth were the victims of a bizarre decision by one of the umpires as they had a goal ruled out for the ball going out of play when the umpire didn't actually see the incident. Clearly deflated by the decision Broxbourne compounded the agony when they scored the winner with 7 minutes remaining. Law fired a pin-point pass through the Rickmansworth defence and Barnes timed his run perfectly to deflect the ball home. Team: Staples, J Cogdell, Menzies, Fox, Ellis, Addis, Law, Fradley, Barnes, D Cogdell, Anstead.
