Saturday 29th October 2005 Broxbourne Mens 1s v Harleston Magpies Result 2-2: Report by William T. Fradley

Broxbourne produced their best performance of the season to earn a 2-2 draw with league leaders Harleston Magpies. In truth the Badgers will feel that they should have taken all 3 points as they dominated the match for large periods but failed to make the most of the chances they created. Broxbourne's line up was boosted by the presence of New Zealander Anthony Traill having recently signed for his second spell at the club. Traill, playing at the back with Tom Evans produced a commanding performance and was named man of the match. Broxbourne took the lead mid way through the first half, Piers Addis finishing from close range at the second attempt. The home team should have added to their lead but a combination of sloppy short corners and some glaring misses from Sean Robinson and Nick Anstead meant the score remained 1-0. Harleston made them pay when they equalised on the stroke of half time, Nick Hill giving the ball away at the top of his own D to leave the Harleston forward with a simple finish. The badgers didn't let the disappointment of conceding the equaliser affect them and started the second half strongly playing a high tempo physical style of hockey with Paul Dover and Will Fradley pulling the strings from midfield. They got their reward when following the dismissal of a Harleston player, a short corner was awarded from which Robinson scored. The skippers weak flick seemed like a simple save for the keeper, however fortune was with Robinson as the flick somehow rolled beneath the keepers flailing left boot. The old cliche about being at your most vulnerable after scoring a goal proved correct as Broxbourne immediately surrendered the lead, the magpies scoring from a short corner. Despite having a man extra Broxbourne could not find the winner and had to settle for a draw. They will seek to build the performance this Saturday when high flying Peterborough Town are the visitors.
