Saturday 25th March 2006 Broxbourne Mens 1s v Bourne Result - won 7-3: Report by The Magpie

Broxbourne closed out the 2005-06 season with a convincing 7-3 win over Bourne in a fiery encounter. The Badgers started slowly and found themselves behind after 7 minutes. Right back Tony Rutter was beaten for pace and the Bourne forward the beat keeper Alex Ford at his near post. The goal seemed to spark the home side to life and they produced two quick goals to take the lead. Rob Dyer's drag flick from a short corner gave the keeper no chance and then Hertfordshire under 17 representative Andrew Law, making his first team debut, belied his age with composed finish after beating two players. The Badgers then began to dominate but only managed one further goal before half time. Nick Hill applied the finishing touch to slick move as Bourne had no answer to Broxbourne's one touch hockey. In the second half the home side added to further goals quickly to end the game as a contest. Dyer converted a penalty flick with some style and skipper Sean Robinson's tap-in made the score 5-1. The game then turned nasty as three players were sent off in quick succession. Tom Evans was sin-binned somewhat harshly for a push on a Bourne attacker. The Didier Drogba like dive seemed to convince the umpire that the challenge warranted a spell on the sidelines. Then an extremely unsavoury incident resulted in both sides having a man red carded. Dyer received a low blow from a Bourne defender and reacted angrily by shoving the offender to the ground. Southpaw Dyer later admitted he was ready to unleash a left hook but thought better of it. With a man advantage Bourne briefly threatened a comeback with two quick goals. However the Badgers enforced their dominance with two goals of their own. Law grabbed his second when he used his explosive pace to latch onto a through ball and then beat the keeper with ease. The best goal of the game was saved for last when Alex Brown was rewarded for his tireless running as he latched on to a pinpoint pass from Paul Dover to finish with exquisite style. The win meant Broxbourne won their last five games and recorded their highest ever finish in the east's top league - 5th. Team: Ford, Bonehead, Evans, Law, Ellis, Brown, Fradley, Dover, Hill, Robinson, Dyer. Subs: Wyman, Kopsis
