Saturday 21st January 2006 Broxbourne Mens 1s v Bedford Result 3-2: Report by The Magpie

Broxbourne continued their recent fine form with another win over one of the league's top sides after they earned a hard fought 3-2 win over Bedford Town. Skipper Sean Robinson gave his side the perfect start when he used his explosive pace to latch onto Alex Brown's throughball and then produced a calm finish to give Broxbourne the lead. Strike partner Rob Dyer then doubled the home side's advantage on 20 minutes with a dubious goal. Not reknowned for his football skills, Dyer appeared to deflect a cross in with his foot rather than his stick. Ever the honest sportsman, Dyer wheeled away in celebration and the goal was given much to the dismay of the Bedford players. Bedford responded well and dominated the rest of half. Keeper Alex Ford, back to his best after an uncertain spell before Christmas, made several spectacular saves to preserve the Badgers lead. Just before halftime Ford was finally beaten when Bedford took advantage of some slack marking to make the score 2-1. After the break the Badgers came out re-energised and restored their two goal advantage immediately. Paul Dover made a great interception to set up Robinson who again finished with ease. Broxbourne should have gone 4-1 up but Dan Nearney's strike was wrongly ruled out for being outside the D. For Nearney, on his 39 th birthday the day was to get far worse when he scored a spectacular own goal with 15 minutes left to set up a tense finish. It was backs against the wall for the rest of the match as Bedford desperately searched for the equaliser. The Broxbourne defence led by man of the match Pete Ware held firm though as the home side clinched an important victory. Team: Ford, Sterling-Brown, Ware, Evans, Fradley, Hill, Traill, Dover, Brown, Dyer, Robinson. Sub: Nearney. Next week the Badgers travel to Essex to face Havering looking to continue their winning run.
