Saturday 18th February 2006 Broxbourne Mens 1s v Peterborough Town Result lost 6-4: Report by The Magpie

Broxbourne suffered their second consecutive defeat as they lost 6-4 to a very physical and dirty Peterborough Town. The Badgers made a fine start and took the lead after 10 minutes through Dan Nearney. Having been dropped the previous week for a series of poor performances Nearney clearly had a point to prove as he finished well after good work from captain Sean Robinson. This seemed to awaken the home side who showed why they are top of the league by scoring three quick goals to make the score 3-1. At half-time Bibs,Balls and Cones coordinator Paul Dover made some tactical adjustments but these seemed to hinder rather than help the Badgers as they shipped two more goals in the opening minutes of the second half. At 5-1 down the Badgers could have easily crumbled but instead showed some of the fighting spirit and teamwork that has been such an asset this season with two quick goals bringing them right back into the game. Alex Brown set up Will Fradley who slammed the ball home from the top of the D and then former French international Antoine Detr á ille finished off a slick short corner routine at the far post. With momentum firmly behind them the Badgers were then hit by a sucker punch as Peterborough scored a break away goal to all but clinch victory. League top scorer Gareth Andrew who had been kept quiet by an excellent marking job by Freddie Stirling-Brown finally got the better of the youngster and then drove keeper Alex Ford mad as he beat him from a tight angle at his near post. There was still time for the Badgers to get a consolation as Robinson's mis-hit reverse stick shot somehow went in but it was a case of too little too late. Team: Ford, Brown, Evans, Stirling-Brown, Ellis, Hill, Fradley, Detr á ille, Nearney, Hamid, Dyer. Sub: Robinson. Next week the Badgers face West Herts at home and will be looking to get back to winning ways.
