Saturday 14th January 2006 Broxbourne Mens 1s v Cambridge City Result 2-1: Report by The Magpie

The Badgers opened up the second half of the 2005/06 season with an impressive victory on the road against league leaders Cambridge City. Having not played since December 10th and some players looking like they'd had one too many portions of Christmas pudding over the holiday period Broxbourne could have been forgiven for making a slow start to the game. The opposite proved to be the case as they dominated the early exchanges and were encamped in the City half. Midfield duo of Ben Dover and Dutch star Anthony Van Traill took control of preceedings and Van Traill gave Broxbourne the lead when he scored past a bewildered looking City keeper with his trademark reverse stick tomahawk. The rest of the half was a physical affair with a flurry of green cards shown and not many chances created and the Badgers went in at the break 1-0 up. Broxbourne got a boost immediately after half time when the home team were reduced to 10 men and they almost made the extra man pay but Rob Dyer lashed his shot wide when clean through. Skipper Sean Robinson was quick to politely let Dyer know that he was unmarked and a pass may have been the better option. Cambridge then made Dyer regret his profligacy when they scored the equaliser mid way through the second half, keeper Alex Ford made a good save from a shot from the top of D but the rebound fell straight to a City player who finished with ease. The Badgers responded well and quickly re-took the lead. Dover won a short corner from which Dyer stepped up to the plate and unleashed a drag flick into the roof of the net to atone for his earlier miss. Seemingly set for victory Broxbourne were made to sweat for the last 10 minutes when Dan Nearney was needlessly sent off for hitting the ball away after the whistle had gone. As a PE teacher Nearney really should be setting a better example for any of his pupils that may read this. Nearney was deservedly voted arse of the match to take his tally to four for the season. The Badgers defense held firm with keeper Ford making several fine saves and Broxbourne got a deserved victory. Team: Ford, Sterling-Brown, Evans, Ware, Fradley, Hill, Dover, Traill, Brown, Dyer, Robinson. Sub: Nearney. Next week the Badgers welcome high flying Bedford Town to Mill Lane in what will be another tough match.
