Saturday 11th March 2006 Broxbourne Mens 1s v Chelmsford 2s (!) Result - won 4-1: Report by The Magpie
Broxbourne made it three wins on the bounce as they earned a comfortable 4-1 victory over the real Chelmsford 2nd XI. The start of the match was a tense affair. The Badgers played with a lot of heart and commitment but decision making continually let them down as they struggled to create openings. On 20 minutes the Badgers finally created a chance of note. Nick Hill, having done the hard work of rounding the keeper produced a weak flick that was easily stopped on the line by the Chelmsford defender. Then disaster struck as the home side were reduced to 10 men. Left back Danny Ellis was sin binned for foul and abusive language towards the umpire. Ellis, who has a history of disciplinary problems seemed to have curbed his temper having gone some months without a yellow card. However Saturday's x-rated display proved the veteran's suspect temperament has become a problem again. The decision seemed to galvanise the Badgers who upped the tempo, started pressing Chelmsford and won a short corner from which Anthony Traill blasted the ball into the bottom corner to give Broxbourne the lead. Returning to full strength at the start of the second half Broxbourne began to assert themselves as Chelmsford's heads began to drop. They doubled the lead on 45 minutes when a diving Dan Nearney majestically deflected Rob Dyer's cross in. Dyer's tireless running was rewarded when he helped himself to a goal as the striker roofed a flick past the motionless Chelmsford keeper. Paul Dover's reverse stick strike made the score 4-0 before an error from makeshift centre back Will Fradley allowed Chelmsford to score a late consolation. Fradley had been involved in a running battle all game with a Chelmsford thug known as Bruiser. Bruiser, like his team, looked like a beaten man at the end as the Badgers avenged the defeat to Chelmsford 1's/2's earlier in the season. Team: Ford, Brown, Long, Evans, Ellis, Traill, Dover, Fradley, Hill, Robinson, Nearney. Subs: Dyer, Hopson. Next week the Badgers travel to Bishops Stortford looking to keep their winning run going.
