Saturday 3rd December 2005 Broxbourne Mens 1s v Bishops Stortford Result 9-6: Report by The Magpie

Broxbourne survived a late second half collapse as they held on for a 9-6 victory over Bishops Stortford at Mill Lane. Boosted by the return of manager Bob Gotobed after a 2 week absence the Badgers immediately took control of the game and their fine start was rewarded after 5 minutes when shaven headed skipper Sean Robinson despatched a penalty flick. Instead of building on this lead the Badgers lost their concentration and allowed Stortford to equalise almost straight away from a short corner. The home side put this behind them though and re-took the lead soon after when Rob Dyer picked out Dan Hopson's perceptive run with a beautifully weighted throughball to leave Hopson with a simple tap-in. Four further goals followed from Paul Dover, Russian exile Anatoly Traillov, and two from Dyer to leave Broxbourne 6-1 up at the interval. Dyer's second was the goal of the game as he showed quite a deft touch for a big man when he deflected Robinson's pass into the top corner. At half time the vociferous Gotobed encouraged his troops to get the next goal and they duly obliged when Traillov's reverse stick shot found the bottom corner. Dan Nearney's majestic strike made the score 8-1, Nearney's delight soon turned to anguish though when his not so majestic goal celebration went wrong and the Norfolk lad had to be carried off with a back strain. With the game seemingly won Broxbourne went into self destruct mode pushing more and more men forward. Stortford made them pay with five quick breakaway goals to leave the home side anxiously asking the umpire how long was left. Their nerves were eased with six minutes remaining when Dyer made sure of the win by completing his hat-trick from the spot. On a sour note defensive duo Pete Ware and Tom Evans were yellow carded and both will now serve one match suspensions ruling them out of next weeks final game before Christmas at Bourne. Both seemed really upset that they would miss out on the two and a half hour journey to the middle of Lincolnshire.
