As most of you are aware Maureen Bealby died on Tuesday 19th June 2007.

Maureen was a true stalwart of Broxbourne Hockey Club!

After being a member of Turncoats – a mixed hockey team that comprised of regular playing members of both Broxbourne and Southgate hockey clubs, Maureen decided to take the plunge and joined Tony (her husband) at Broxbourne.

She and Tony toured with the Club to Barbados 1985 and then she became a regular player in the ladies section.

In the early nineties Maureen and Tony took on the management and running of the junior section. This heralded an invigoration of our junior section and a huge period of focus. Maureen and Tony coached, arranged matches, organised subscriptions and most of all inspired all our youngsters for many years. Despite Tony and Maureen not having children of their own they created a new era of hockey juniors – the Bealby babes!

The enthusiasm which Maureen dedicated to the juniors was immense – juniors became the priority at committee meetings and our emphasis as a club started to change. We evolved at fast past into both the family club that we had a history of being to the family club with great young players.

In fact when the new Broxbourne Astro-turf pitch was launched in 1997 it was important to the club that juniors played a key part in the celebration.

Maureen and Tony were Vice-Presidents of the Hockey Club for their great contribution to the sport of hockey and Broxbourne Hockey Club.

Following Tony’s sudden death in 2001 Maureen continued to dedicate her time to the Club, both as a player and organiser.

Maureen was awarded the Benita Berg Trophy for contribution for hockey at Broxbourne in 2002.

In 2004 we celebrated her 70th birthday at the Club – with a great hockey match – with Maureen playing a key role in the game.

The junior section at Broxbourne continues to thrive under the leadership of Fiona Copley with numerous coaches and a great player development policy. This is a fantastic legacy that Maureen has left the Club – both a joy of hockey, youth and great stamina!

Maureen’s funeral will take place on Monday 9th July at Enfield Crematorium at 2pm . Refreshments afterwards will be at Wodson Park. All hockey players and hockey enthusiasts are most welcome!
