Saturday 28th October Broxbourne Ladies 5's vs Hertford 4's Result: Broxbourne won 1-0
With a whiff of a bubbling cauldron in the air Broxbourne Ladies 5s took advantage of impending Halloween by swapping hockey sticks for broomsticks to inflict a 1 - 0 victory over Hertford Ladies 4s - Katie Vickers scored from a neatly worked short corner, the tactic taken from an old witches manual and perfectly executed.at without them Guest witches from the 4s boosted the team in the absence of some regulars who were at a convention in Eastwick just outside Wedlock near Harlow. We also swapped the match ball for a pumpkin because I'd forgotten to wear my contact lenses and I'm as blind as a bat - though why the expression is not known as being as blind as a stick or racket I'll never know except that the phrase must have been coined by a cricket fan dubious of a Dickie Bird umpiring decision. Anyway with a pumpkin for a ball we stood a chance although by the end of the game it was pretty badly mutilated and despite raiding the first aid kit and administering an ice pack the poor pumpkin had to be ceremoniously dumped at the end of the game. The Ladies 5s resume their league programme next week with a trip to Welwyn against their Ladies 4s. We've held 2nd position in the league for quite a while now mainly due to the half term break. The break came at an unfortunate time interrupting our winning streak of one game.
