Saturday 6th January 2007 Broxbourne Ladies 5's vs Tring 3s Result: Draw 0-0
I have to admit that I thought we might be in for a bit of a bashing against a side riding near the top of Five Counties Division 5 but my ban on players eating any Christmas Pudding and mince pies over the festive period obviously paid off - although it has to be said that Jackie Gates bent the rules and had some Stollen cake on Friday night and not only that she stayed in her car out of the rain missing the prematch 2 laps of the pitch. However, by the time Jackie did get out of her car the puddle she had parked in had become a lake and she had to swim to the pitch. This wouldn't have been so much of a problem had she not lost her bikini top while the waves were lashing around her. Where was I? oh yes the match. Well what a performance. Without exception every player gave 100% and more. We hassled, we ran, we never gave up and the reward was a deserved 0 - 0 draw against a team riding near the top of 5 Counties Division 5. The first half in particular saw the Tring GK troubled on several occasions - if only Jackie hadn't had that piece of Stollen cake!! This was one of those games where you come off pitch buzzing and so proud of everyone's efforts. But I'm basking in the reflected glory of Fee's coaching and drilling of the Broxbourne Babes. What awful weather though - I saw 2 men building a large boat and I'm sure one called to the other 'Noah can you pass me the hammer' I think we might have won the game had a couple of our players not insisted on carrying umbrellas whist playing. One said she had a hot date and didn't want to spoil her hair and the other wasn't wearing a vest. There were a couple of dodgy moments in the second half, especially the one where the ball managed to avoid the outstretched sticks of 6 players as it sailed across the goal. The youngsters in the 5s are coming along nicely and gaining confidence with each game. We are languishing perilously close to the bottom of division 5 but if we continue to improve I'm sure we'll do a Houdini - or David Blaine if you are younger although did he actually escape from that glass box or is he still in it? We play Allenbury's at home this week and I'm going to ask that their team be tested for drugs after the game if they win. You're not telling me that working for Glaxo that drugs aren't easily accessible although I'm not sure how much difference a Ventolin inhaler and a dose of Zantac can make to a players performance.
