Saturday 3rd December Broxbourne Ladies 1's vs Stevenage 1's Result: Won 5-2
Broxbourne took all the points from the match, as they beat Stevenage 5-2 to move up to 4th in the table. In a match that Broxbourne were determined to win, it was fitting that Annette Berg, playing her last match for a club that she has played for since a junior, scored the opening goal in what was to prove a high scoring match. Broxbourne started the match the better of the two sides, Stevenage were pinned back into their own half as Broxbourne pressed their free hits, not allowing them to play the ball through to their attacking players. The sustained pressure from Broxbourne lead to the first short corner, from which Berg was to score, one of her trademark strikes at goal leaving the keeper as merely a spectator. Brxoburne doubled the lead just a minute later as a perfectly weighted ball from Jo Connolly found Sue House in the D, with a first time strike she found the goal and Broxbourne were in command. Stevenage began to claw their way back into the match, good work from the Broxbourne defensive line meant that they were unable to gain any advantage from the pressure. Broxbourne were soon on the counter attack and a quick ball into the Stevenage D lead to a free hit being awarded in a dangerous position. Kate Maxfield stepped up to take the hit, finding Mel Evans who turned quickly and was able to find the goal with an unstoppable strike. Broxbourne looked like they were going to go into the break 3 goals to the good, however Stevenage managed to pull one back before the break from a short corner to make it 3-1 at half time. The second half saw the match swing from end to end, Stevenage got back to within 1 goal of Broxbourne as a quick break left Stevenage with a one on one with the keeper from which they scored. Straight from the restart, Broxbourne restored their advantage as good running by Maxfield caused the defence to foul her in the D, leading to another corner. This time Berg slipped the ball to House who made no mistake in slotting home. The fifth goal came close to the end of the match as Gemma Smith popped up to sweep home a cross into the D. Broxbourne will play basement side St Albans in a rearranged fixture on Saturday, victory would see them climb to second in the table.
